Another approach is to wait for the initial reaction and ask whether it tends to continue. The table below shows the correlation between the 1D return and the return over the following 5 and 21 trading days, and between the 5D return and the following 21 trading days. A value near 1 means the first move has tended to continue; near -1, to reverse; near 0, no consistent pattern. Over five years none of these correlations is strong enough to trade on: all are below 0.40 in absolute terms, so the early post-earnings move has not reliably predicted what followed. AXTI Q3 Earnings Beat on Record InP Sales and Margin Gains
AXT, Inc. AXTI reported non-GAAP earnings of 41 cents per share in the third quarter of 2026, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 31 cents by 32.26%. The company had recorded a non-GAAP loss of 3 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Revenues rose 162% year over year and 54% sequentially to $73.4 million, topping the consensus estimate by 11.05%. Strong indium phosphide (InP) sales to AI data-center customers and higher manufacturing productivity supported the beat. Backlog surpassed $500 million. InP revenues reached $54.3 million, the highest level in AXT's history. Data-center demand accounted for the bulk of InP sales as customers deployed high-speed optical components. The shift to 800G and 1.6T transceiver modules is fueling demand for InP-based lasers and photodetectors that move data across dense AI computing systems. Management also expects growing demand for continuous-wave lasers used in next-generation optical interconnects. AXT Inc price-consensus-eps-surprise-chart | AXT Inc Quote Gallium arsenide (GaAs) revenues totaled $9.1 million in the third quarter. Demand for semi-insulating and semiconducting wafers increased sequentially, supported by wireless devices, industrial robotics and data-center laser applications. Germanium substrate revenues reached $344,000, while consolidated raw-material businesses contributed $9.7 million. The company's five largest customers represented about 35% of total revenues, with one customer accounting for more than 10%. Management expects some GaAs markets to soften seasonally in the fourth quarter. Non-GAAP gross margin rose to 56.1% from 45% in the prior quarter and 22.4% a year earlier. Increased volumes, a richer InP product mix, improved factory efficiency and higher selling prices for InP wafers contributed to the expansion. Non-GAAP operating expenses increased to $11.7 million from $10.2 million sequentially and $6.7 million a year earlier. Even with higher spending, non-GAAP operating income jumped to $29.5 million from $11.2 million in the previous quarter, against a $0.4 million operating loss a year ago. AXT exceeded its initial 2026 target to double InP capacity by August. Management now anticipates exiting 2026 with about 2.75 to three times its year-end 2025 capacity, followed by another doubling in 2027. Management now anticipates exiting 2026 with about 2.75 to three times its year-end 2025 capacity, followed by another doubling in 2027. The company is also planning to convert an adjacent building into manufacturing space. New proprietary crystal-growth furnaces are helping increase wafer output. Six-inch InP lines are entering pilot production, while customers are transitioning from three-inch to higher-value four-inch wafers. AXT expects the shift in laser substrates to accelerate in 2027, creating further pricing and margin opportunities. Management said demand still exceeds InP supply, with all customers on allocation. The order book spans multiyear agreements, shorter contracts and spot purchase orders extending into 2027. Orders from Chinese customers have also increased, with domestic shipments avoiding export-permit requirements. During the quarter, AXT signed a supply agreement with Lumentum and received a $43.5 million wafer prepayment. The advance remains a liability until related wafers ship. Management said many orders carry lead times exceeding nine months and it is limiting new long-term commitments to preserve pricing flexibility. Cash, cash equivalents and investments were $825.9 million as of Sept. 30, 2026, up from $748.8 million at June 30. Days sales outstanding improved to 49 following customer prepayments, while net inventory increased approximately $7.4 million sequentially. The majority-owned Tongmei subsidiary agreed to a private equity financing of up to $545 million to fund wafer and raw-material capacity expansion in China. If fully subscribed, AXT would retain approximately 73.4% ownership. Tongmei is also pursuing a Hong Kong stock market listing. AXT has approximately $90 million in revenues for the fourth quarter of 2026, supported by existing export permits or shipments requiring no permit. AXT expressed high confidence in realizing that amount, while InP is expected to account for most of the sequential sales increase. Non-GAAP earnings are projected at 57-59 cents per share, with GAAP earnings expected at 56-58 cents. Non-GAAP operating expenses are pegged at roughly $13 million versus $14 million on a GAAP basis. The share-count assumption is 66.1 million. Gross margin could exceed 60%. AXT currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Microchip Technology (MCHP) Earnings Expected to Grow: What to Know Ahead of Next Week's Release
The market expects Microchip Technology (MCHP) to deliver a year-over-year increase in earnings on higher revenues when it reports results for the quarter ended September 2026. This widely-known consensus outlook is important in assessing the company's earnings picture, but a powerful factor that might influence its near-term stock price is how the actual results compare to these estimates. The stock might move higher if these key numbers top expectations in the upcoming earnings report, which is expected to be released on November 5. On the other hand, if they miss, the stock may move lower. While management's discussion of business conditions on the earnings call will mostly determine the sustainability of the immediate price change and future earnings expectations, it's worth having a handicapping insight into the odds of a positive EPS surprise. This chipmaker is expected to post quarterly earnings of $0.94 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of +168.6%. Revenues are expected to be $1.61 billion, up 41% from the year-ago quarter. The consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has been revised 1.96% higher over the last 30 days to the current level. This is essentially a reflection of how the covering analysts have collectively reassessed their initial estimates over this period. Investors should keep in mind that an aggregate change may not always reflect the direction of estimate revisions by each of the covering analysts. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise Estimate revisions ahead of a company's earnings release offer clues to the business conditions for the period whose results are coming out. Our proprietary surprise prediction model -- the Zacks Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) -- has this insight at its core. The Zacks Earnings ESP compares the Most Accurate Estimate to the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the quarter; the Most Accurate Estimate is a more recent version of the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate. The idea here is that analysts revising their estimates right before an earnings release have the latest information, which could potentially be more accurate than what they and others contributing to the consensus had predicted earlier. Thus, a positive or negative Earnings ESP reading theoretically indicates the likely deviation of the actual earnings from the consensus estimate. However, the model's pre…Read full documentShow less

However, the model's predictive power is significant for positive ESP readings only. A positive Earnings ESP is a strong predictor of an earnings beat, particularly when combined with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold). Our research shows that stocks with this combination produce a positive surprise nearly 70% of the time, and a solid Zacks Rank actually increases the predictive power of Earnings ESP. Please note that a negative Earnings ESP reading is not indicative of an earnings miss. Our research shows that it is difficult to predict an earnings beat with any degree of confidence for stocks with negative Earnings ESP readings and/or Zacks Rank of 4 (Sell) or 5 (Strong Sell). For Microchip Tech, the Most Accurate Estimate is higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate, suggesting that analysts have recently become bullish on the company's earnings prospects. This has resulted in an Earnings ESP of +3.31%. On the other hand, the stock currently carries a Zacks Rank of #2. So, this combination indicates that Microchip Tech will most likely beat the consensus EPS estimate. Analysts often consider to what extent a company has been able to match consensus estimates in the past while calculating their estimates for its future earnings. So, it's worth taking a look at the surprise history for gauging its influence on the upcoming number. For the last reported quarter, it was expected that Microchip Tech would post earnings of $0.7 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.76, delivering a surprise of +8.57%. Over the last four quarters, the company has beaten consensus EPS estimates four times. An earnings beat or miss may not be the sole basis for a stock moving higher or lower. Many stocks end up losing ground despite an earnings beat due to other factors that disappoint investors. Similarly, unforeseen catalysts help a number of stocks gain despite an earnings miss. That said, betting on stocks that are expected to beat earnings expectations does increase the odds of success. This is why it's worth checking a company's Earnings ESP and Zacks Rank ahead of its quarterly release. Make sure to utilize our Earnings ESP Filter to uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they've reported. Microchip Tech appears a compelling earnings-beat candidate. However, investors should pay attention to other factors too for betting on this stock or staying away from it ahead of its earnings release. ON Semiconductor Corp. (ON), another stock in the Zacks Semiconductor - Analog and Mixed industry, is expected to report earnings per share of $0.88 for the quarter ended September 2026. This estimate points to a year-over-year change of +39.7%. Revenues for the quarter are expected to be $1.71 billion, up 10% from the year-ago quarter. Over the last 30 days, the consensus EPS estimate for ON Semiconductor Corp. has been revised 0.7% up to the current level. Nevertheless, the company now has an Earnings ESP of +5.68%, reflecting a higher Most Accurate Estimate. This Earnings ESP, combined with its Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggests that ON Semiconductor Corp. will most likely beat the consensus EPS estimate. The company beat consensus EPS estimates in each of the trailing four quarters. Stay on top of upcoming earnings announcements with the Zacks Earnings Calendar. Aehr Test Systems' first-quarter fiscal 2027 results are expected to benefit from strong demand for burn-in and reliability testing systems from AI processor and data center customers. The company entered fiscal 2027 with a record backlog of $80.6 million and received another $20 million in bookings during the transition period and the first two weeks of the new fiscal year. This increased its effective backlog to approximately $100.6 million before accounting for minimal shipments during the transition period. AEHR is expected to have benefited from rising demand for wafer-level burn-in systems used for AI processors. AEHR has also begun shipping Sonoma systems through a contract manufacturer in Southeast Asia, which adds capacity of more than 20 systems per month. However, component availability and shipment timing could have affected AEHR's prospects in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. Management noted that some component suppliers, particularly power supply manufacturers, have raised prices significantly as they also serve major AI companies. AEHR is working with contract manufacturers and expanding production capacity to meet customer demand, but supply chain execution remains important as shipments increase. The company's $1.7 billion defense backlog and 1.3 book-to-bill ratio exiting the second quarter provide healthy revenue visibility. Programs involving Golden Dome, APS-153 maritime surveillance radar and ATP Sensor Systems are likely to have supported performance. Moreover, the initial production ramp of Ultra-High-Density Interconnect (Ultra-HDI) products at its new Syracuse facility during the third quarter is expected to have strengthened its advanced defense electronics capabilities. The Medical, Industrial and Instrumentation end market is expected to have contributed positively to TTM Technologies' third-quarter performance. Strong demand for continuous glucose monitoring devices, surgical robotics and electrophysiology solutions is likely to have supported medical revenues. Growing adoption of automated test equipment supporting AI applications is anticipated to have strengthened instrumentation demand. The segment recorded 33% year-over-year growth in the preceding quarter, while management projected 35-40% growth for full-year 2026. These favorable demand trends are expected to have supported revenue growth in the quarter under review. However, TTM Technologies is likely to have faced pressure from its automotive business in the quarter under review. Management expects automotive to account for approximately 6% of third-quarter sales, down from 8% in the previous quarter, reflecting continued weakness and limited availability of certain supply chain materials. Copper-clad laminate producers are shifting away from lower-complexity materials toward higher-complexity products, creating potential supply constraints. Although TTMI is working with suppliers to secure adequate materials, these challenges could have restricted sales opportunities and affected production flexibility in the quarter to be reported. Shares of TTM Technologies have climbed 46.9% year to date, outperforming the Zacks Computer and Technology sector's 19.2% rise. Among its competitors, Microchip Technology MCHP has advanced 16.5% and Mercury Systems MRCY has gained 4.6%, whereas Curtiss-Wright CW has declined 9.1% over the same period. While Mercury Systems and Curtiss-Wright compete with TTMI in the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, Microchip Technology operates in the RF & Components (RF&S) space. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Now, let's look at the value TTM Technologies offers investors at current levels. Currently, TTMI appears overvalued, as suggested by the Value Score of C. TTMI trades at 37.96x trailing 12-month (P/E), well above the Zacks Electronics - Miscellaneous Components industry average of 21.32x. Its competitors also trade at varying multiples: Microchip Technology at 22.5x, Mercury Systems at 236.53x and Curtiss-Wright at 34.78x. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research TTM Technologies is benefiting from strong AI-related demand, defense spending and growth in medical electronics. Its expanding backlog, improving margins and planned European acquisitions offer additional growth opportunities. However, capacity expansion, production ramp-ups, supply constraints and debt obligations could create challenges. TTMI's growth outlook remains positive, but its performance will depend on managing costs, expanding production successfully and maintaining strong customer demand. TTM Technologies' outlook ahead of its third-quarter 2026 results reflects strong growth opportunities from AI data centers, defense and medical electronics, supported by improving margins and a growing backlog. However, its premium valuation, rising capital spending, supply constraints and production challenges warrant caution. Given the company's growth prospects and execution risks, existing investors may consider holding their positions, while prospective investors may wait for the upcoming results and a more attractive entry point before making a decision.
