Biggest risk

The quarter included $29.4 million of charge-offs tied to the two credits, adjusted pre-tax pre-provision income declined slightly sequentially, and nine-month GAAP EPS remained below the year-earlier period. A new credit problem or weaker funding mix could overwhelm the Q3 EPS beat. No verified post-print analyst estimate or target revision was available. [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21]

What would change my mind?

The adjusted EPS beat, sequential margin expansion, deposit growth and progress on the two troubled credits support a constructive interpretation of the release. The deterministic prior is positive, but the early T+1 share response is modest. [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21] AP earnings snapshot

Commentary

The company release and reported EPS consensus support a modestly positive earnings reading, but the approximately 1.1% October 22 intraday gain is provisional, not a confirmed closing reaction. No reliable post-print analyst target or estimate revisions were found at this early T+1 checkpoint. The supplied earnings-document row concerns 1st Source (SRCE), not FRME, and was excluded; social sentiment, options skew, short interest and employee sentiment were unavailable. Resolution of two commercial credits
Management said it made meaningful progress resolving the two commercial credits identified in the second quarter. Third-quarter net charge-offs were $29.4 million, driven by those credits; nonperforming assets were broadly stable at 0.57% of assets versus 0.56% in the prior quarter. Evidence of durable credit stabilization, rather than the earnings rebound alone, would matter for the thesis. [#SEC-8K-2026-07-22] [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21]

Third-quarter earnings beat, with an initial but unsettled price response
2026-10-22
Adjusted EPS was $1.10 versus the $1.04 consensus reported by AP; GAAP EPS was $1.09. The company reported a 3.44% taxable-equivalent net interest margin, up six basis points sequentially. The October 22 intraday quote was about 1.1% above the prior close, but that is not a closing-day reaction. [#8-K-2026-10-21] [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21] AP earnings snapshot

Months to a year

Deposit growth and capital returns
2026-12-31
Linked-quarter deposits rose $175.6 million, or 4.2% annualized, while loans rose $70.2 million, or 1.8% annualized. The bank repurchased $12.0 million of shares in the third quarter and reported an 11.22% common-equity Tier 1 ratio. Continued deposit growth without renewed credit deterioration could support further capital returns; neither outcome is assured. [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21]

Credit risk remains material: third-quarter net charge-offs of $29.4 million were driven by two previously identified nonperforming credits. [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21]

Nine-month GAAP EPS was $2.24 versus $2.90 a year earlier; acquisition costs and an earlier mortgage-loan valuation adjustment complicate comparisons. [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21]
The planned CEO transition at year-end 2026 adds execution risk. [#SEC-8K-2026-10-21]
